On October 15, 2017 the CEC held its Annual General Meeting in Canmore, Alberta. There were over 60 people in attendance both in person (about 30) and on online. It was encouraging to see so many interested community members. Thanks to everyone for their participation.
The following people were elected to the CEC board. Steve Frangos, Malek Taleb, Greg Locke, Sebastian Powell, Dung Nguyen and Sean McColl. They will hold these positions until our next AGM, tentatively slated to coincide with the May 2018 Difficulty Speed Nationals.
At the end of the formal part of the AGM, we shared information on the history of the CEC and the significant contributions of the founding board over the last six years. We also discussed the CEC’s prioritized goals for the next seven months and why we are focusing on these. We encourage you to review the attached documents CEC AGM Presentation Oct 2017 and the AGM LTAD NCCP presentation October 2017 for insight into the discussion.
The most important goal of the CEC is to encourage and provide opportunity for more significant involvement in the development of the CEC from our talented and engaged climbing community. In order for the CEC to continue to mature as the National Sport Organization (NSO) for competitive climbing in Canada, and as we prepare for the sport’s inclusion in the 2020 Olympics, we have a lot to do. In the coming weeks you will see a number of requests for participation in committees and operational roles that will be established to work toward the CEC’s prioritized goals. Please consider putting your name forward.
We will also be embarking on a strategic review initiative, with the goal of reviewing the structure and operations of the CEC. This review will be conducted by a committee selected from our community who will work with sport management consultants hired by the CEC. The committee will make recommendations for changes necessary for the CEC to continue to mature as an NSO and to ensure we are structured to meet the needs of our members. (Note: There are five members of the CEC: Alpine Club of Canada (ACC), Sport Climbing BC (SCBC), Alberta Climbing Association (ACA), Ontario Climbing Federation (OCF), Fédération Québécoise de la Montagne et de l’Escalade (FQME)).
The new CEC board held its first board meeting post AGM where the roles of the board have been established:
Steve Frangos – Chair
Sebastian Powell – Vice Chair
Malek Taleb – Treasurer
Greg Locke – Secretary
Dung Nugyen – Member at Large
Sean McColl – Athlete Representative, Member at Large
We welcome feedback and encourage your participation in the ongoing development of your NSO.
