CEC Youth Combined Series (Boulder & Lead)

SERIES DETAILS

  • Category: Youth C (12-13 – Regionals only), Youth B (14-15), Youth A (16-17), Junior (18-19)
  • Division: Female / Male
  • LTAD Stages targeted: Train to Train, Train to Compete & Learn to Win
  • Events (3): Eastern Regional Championships, Western Regional Championships, and National Championships
  • Discipline: Boulder (1 or 2 days), Lead (1 or 2 days)
  • Regional Championships Date: Second weekend of April, Friday (day 1) through Sunday (day 3)
  • National Championships Date: long weekend of May, Thursday (day 1) through Monday (day 5)
  • Length: 3 days (regionals) – 5 days (nationals)
  • Estimated attendance Regionals: 200 total athletes each region, 150 unique individuals
  • Estimated attendance Nationals: 250 total athletes, 180 unique individuals

OBJECTIVES

Regional Championships

  • Qualification pathway for Youth Nationals
  • Development opportunity for athletes who will not qualify for Nationals
  • Route setters and officials’ development opportunity
  • Hosting opportunity for smaller facilities, regions, PTSOs
  • Preparation for new North American Cup Series format, modified scramble

National Championships

  • Crowning National Champions
  • Continuous National Ranking (CNR) points
  • High Performance Program (HPP) entry pathway
  • Youth World Championship (YWC) Selection Pathway
  • Development opportunity for athletes who will not make HPP or YWC teams
  • Finals are at a level to prepare athletes who will make the HPP and YWC teams.
  • Talent identification event for 16-19 years old athletes
  • Route setters and officials’ development opportunity
  • National celebration of our sport

SCHEDULE

REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS: These events will take place over 3 days. In order to run in this time frame, there will be no Semi-Final Rounds:

  • Day 1 – Boulder Qualification
  • Day 2 – Lead Qualification
  • Day 3 – Boulder and Lead Finals

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS: This event will take place over 5 days:

  • Day 1 and Day 2 – Boulder Competition
  • Day 3 – Rest day
  • Day 4 and Day 5 – Lead Competition

For each event, athletes can register and qualify in both disciplines, or only one discipline.

HOSTING REQUIREMENTS:

CEC is looking for 

  • 1 host for the entire event (hosting both disciplines), or 
  • 2 hosts for this event (hosting one discipline each 
    • 1 boulder host (day 1 and 2) and 
    • 1 lead host (day 4 and 5)

In the case that the event is held at two different facilities, both host facilities must be within 50km of each other (same city or region). Applications can be combined (two host facilities applying together) or individual (1 host facility applying and asking CEC to pair them up with another host). 

Strong consideration will be given to facilities that are supported by their Provincial / Territorial Sport Organization (PTSO). PTSOs can support more than one facility in their jurisdiction.

Boulder Requirements:

  • Minimum 50-60m linear wall space with independent fall zones allowing for 12 boulders to run simultaneously.

Lead Requirements Regionals:

  • Must be able to accommodate 2 individual top-rope and 5 individual lead routes at one time.
  • Walls should be at least 12m+ in height. The overall angle of the wall should be less than 15 degrees. Walls that do not meet this height requirement may still apply, but preference is given to those who fulfill this criterion.

Lead Requirements Nationals:

  • Must be able to accommodate 6 lead routes running at one time.
  • Walls should be at least 12m+ in height. Walls that do not meet this height requirement may still apply, but preference is given to those who fulfill this criterion.
  • Ability to drive one or two actuating boom or scissor lifts in the gym for event prep/setting is preferred.

COMPETITION FORMAT

Bouldering Format

  • Qualifiers – 5 on 5 off isolation. 4 Problems 
  • Semi-Finals – 5 on 5 off isolation. 4 Problems (National Events ONLY, Regional events will NOT have Semi-Final Rounds)
  • Finals – WC format, 4 minutes.  4 Problems 

 Lead Format

  • Top-Rope for Youth C. (Regional Events ONLY)
  • Two (2) qualifiers – Flash Format
  • One (1) Semi-Final – On-sight  (National Events ONLY, Regional events will NOT have Semi-Final Rounds)
  • One (1) Final – On-sight

QUALIFICATION 

Amended for 2022 due to COVID related logistics

Pathway #1 – Pre-Qualification Pathway

  • HPP Athletes
    • Athletes in Youth A and Junior Categories who are selected to the Senior HPP following the 2022 HP Competition will receive a direct invitation to the Youth National Championships
    • HP Competition will be held on March 10-11, 2022, at the Richmond Olympic Oval – MORE INFO
    • Quotas will be discipline-based (HPP athletes in lead will receive invitation for lead event, etc)
  • Reigning National Youth Champions
    • This clause will not apply in 2022 because of the cancelation of Youth Nationals in both 2020 & 2021
  • Youth World Championships
    • This clause will not apply in 2022 

 

Pathway #2 – Provincial Qualification Pathways

  • PTSO Guaranteed National Championships Quotas
    • Each province and territory will start with a fixed number of quota spots for the National Championships. The fixed number of quotas will be determined based on capacity.
    • Each province and territory has autonomy to decide how they will fill these quotas. CEC highly recommends the hosting of a fair competition to qualify the athletes in an equitable manner.
    • Unused quota in this category will not be re-allocated

 

Pathway #3 – Regional Pathway

  • PTSO quotas to Youth Combined Regional Championships
    • Each province and territory will start with a fixed number of quota spots for the Regional Championships for each category. The fixed number of quotas will be determined at least 5 months ahead of the Regional event based on capacity.
    • Each province has autonomy to decide how they will fill these quotas. CEC highly recommends the hosting of a fair competition to qualify the athletes in an equitable manner.
    • Unused quota in this category will be re-allocated to the other provinces in the same region. Process TBA.
  • Regional Quotas to Youth Combined National Championships
    • Top finishers in each category at the Regional Championships will advance to the National Championships. Exact number of spots available will be determined at least 5 months prior to Nationals based on facility capacity.

While we are half way through our Speed World Cup season, our Bouldering World Cup season came to an end this week as we also started our Lead World Cup season.
As a Nation, Canada finished 13th out of 48 ranked countries in bouldering.
Below are our final world ranking results in Bouldering for the 2022 season (overall, there are 150 ranked women, and 153 ranked men)
